    Crafty Picks
2017 was the first year that The Byre Gallery was a sponsor of the Contemporary Craft Festival at Bovey Tracey -  one of the country's best contemporary craft events and a must-visit destination for me every year.
  • Reflected Glory

    Reflected Glory
Ruth Shelley's stunning glass in every exhibition since The Byre opened. At the 2015 International Glass Biennale, Ruth was awarded the Glass Sellers' Maker Award; her new work has been accepted for this year's event which is held at the end of August and, having had a quick preview, I feel sure it will net her another award.
  • Wood Works

    Wood Works
'Out of the Woods' our first exhibition of 2017,  perhaps not surprisingly, features both trees and wood among the art and craft on display - both as subject matter and raw material.  We're delighted to welcome Kerry Harding and Lizzie Farey to the Byre Gallery for the first time. Kerry is drawn to the scenery around her home in west Cornwall and delights in capturing the way that the violence of the elements can soften even the hardest of parts of landscape.

Get in the mood for the festive season with our latest exhibition -  Winter at the Byre: All that Glitters - which opens this Friday.

    Picture Post
Out of the Picture has now been open for a couple of weeks and I'm so enjoying being in the gallery space - I love every new exhibition but the blue walls of this one are particularly pleasing to be surrounded by. I'm always delighted when the pieces of craft I've chosen for the exhibition work with the colour; I want to create a space which both enhances the individual pieces and creates a cohesive feel and doesn't diminish the impact of the work. No matter how much planning I do in advance there is always a fear that something will just not work and undermine the overall look - fingers crossed, it's always been ok so far!

    Off to pastures new...
Spring 2016 exhibition, 'Pastures New,' featured ceramic bodices by Ellen Woods, and glass from Ruth Shelley among other contemporary craft delights.
  • The Little Things

    The Little Things
A large painting or a majestic ceramic or glass piece can be a focal point in a room, but It's not just the large pieces of art or craft that make an impact in the home, so too can a grouping of smaller individual pieces.
  • Glass Act

    Glass Act
I've been lucky enough to have Ruth Shelley's stunning kiln formed glass in every exhibition since The Byre opened in October 2013 - her work even featured on the first poster. Last year Ruth, very deservedly, won the prestigious Glass Sellers' Award at the Stourbridge International Biennale and since then her work has been in even more demand and now features in a number of the most notable galleries in Europe.  I think Ruth's work has continued to develop and each new collection seems even more vibrant and exquisitely crafted than the last; her collection for Pastures New is quite simply stunning.
