Claire Howlett

Claire’s inspiration is derived from the natural world: its beauty, its wildness and its serenity.

Claire’s artwork aims to capture the raw mood of a place, its essence; focusing primarily on water and light. This fascination is then translated in a non- representational

way into paintings. She says: “For me, the energy that is born from the sense of a place is what inspires the work, the residual memory of being immersed in that landscape.

The natural world is my solace, my joy and my sanctuary. I am entranced by the light, the tangled breeze that can whip up from nowhere, the scent of ozone, sunlight dancing on water, ominous skies… it all weaves together to evoke a love I try and translate via my work”.

Most of Claire’s paintings evolve in many layers using glazes and texture, applying and stripping back the paint, reworking the surface to incorporate all that emerges and re-cedes as the painting progresses. This process can either take several months, or sometimes a much more immediate, dynamic work is born. This also seems somehow to connect with my mood, where I have been, the spirit of the place as it emerges. Painting is such a personal journey for me, it is no way formulaic or driven by expectation or reward, it driven by wanting to create something of beauty and impact that evokes as many emotions as possible, that can be enjoyed forever, like
