Soodle -  meaning to walk slowly or in a leisurely manner.
.
As part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, we have a wonderful collaboration by Lucy Spink, one of our long standing and much loved jewellers, and stone carver and sculptor Jo Sweeting. Bringing both their exceptional skills to this project they have created a stunning collection of work.
.
Jo says of the project, "I have for some time wanted to carry the theme of objects or tokens to be worn or carried as you travel. Until now the pieces have been carved in stone. Now they begin a new journey in silver and other metals."
"The words 'Bide' 'Palsh' and 'Foundle' have all formed parts of my process over the past two years and are echoed here in solid silver. They will be held in box shapes to honour their pebble forms and will then have a clasp so that they can be worn. This is the beginning of a series of'Touchstone' jewellery.”
.

For Lucy: "Each brooch starts as a pebble shaped piece of silver which I send off to Jo. She chooses a word from her Wordhoard project and designs the lettering which she applies to the surface. I then etch that silver pebble before crafting a setting for it. This maybe a frame or a boxed setting, and I use oxidising as well as polished silver to highlight different parts of the brooch depending on the word."

All Lucy's work explores her sympathy with nature and her understanding of its fragility. It is beautifully handcrafted, textured jewellery which speaks of the details of our natural environment and the deeply rooted human connection to landscape. Each piece feels as precious as that pebble you curl your hand around and slip into your pocket as a reminder.

Using her grandfather's old workshop tools, each piece she makes shows the marks of process and the beauty of form, reflecting the patterns of nature - the outline shapes of rocky outcrops, the surface patterns made by hammers like the texture of stone, small spurs of silver and gold to replicate the growth patterns of lichens.
