Dawn discovered a love for clay in her teens and always wanted to be a maker. Life took her along a different path but she continued to be drawn back to working with clay and was finally able to pursue her original passion and become a maker in 2020.
Dawn’s thrown and altered vessels made from white earthenware represent life stories: marks and indentations are added to signify unforgettable events and the surface is painted with abstract marks using coloured slips, oxides and underglazes before randomly applying glaze.
Each process symbolises the significant events we encounter and acknowledges the lasting impact they can have. The addition of gilt to the surface references Kintsugi the Japanese art of restoring a broken pot with gold; this much-loved metaphor for life is a reminder to stay hopeful and to celebrate all that we overcome.
