David Muddyman was a graduate of Plymouth College of Art and continued to live and work in the city after graduation. Much of his work was inspired by the landscapes and seascapes around the Rame Peninsula in south-east Cornwall, Plymouth and west Devon. David regularly exhibited at the Byre Gallery which was proud to represent him.
Dave on his work: "The natural world has always been the subject of my work and these paintings try to capture an instant in time within the landscape – the colours, the light, textures and sounds. I like to paint from memory so I don’t paint in-situ but make notes of the how the scene makes me feel; what the weather is like; colours and pigment mixes I might use; and the sounds surrounding me, both real and imagined."
Elaine Dye: When I first met Dave in 2018 and he showed me his elegant work, I assumed he'd brought me pieces inspired by the Rame Peninsula and Mount Edgcumbe because they were so local to the Byre Gallery. But no he assured me, the south east Cornwall coastline was actually one his favourites to paint, before adding - with a slight blush - that as he couldn't drive it was also the easiest spot to get to from his home in Plymouth using public transport. As Dave's many stunning works featuring the Rame Peninsula were hugely popular with our clients I am more than a little thankful that Dave didn't ever get round to taking driving lessons.
Dave was a delight to work with, and a lovely friend whose company and huge talent I miss.
