Mentoring: making the most of your creative business

As a professional artist or designer-maker you get to do what you love for a living. But as well as being able to immerse yourself in the creative process, you have to deal with the realities of building your business and developing your career; and sometimes you may lose a bit of focus on where you’re going and what your priorities should be.

Elaine Dye draws on her experience as a curator, gallery owner and former PR professional, together with her business and executive coaching qualifications (Institute of Learning Management Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching (2014); Advanced Certificate in Executive Coaching, University of the West of England (2013) to offer focused and effective mentoring for both emerging and established creatives.

No two artists or makers are the same, nor is their ambition for their practice or their business, so each mentoring programme is based on individual needs and is tailor made for each client to help release their potential.

The areas that can be covered include: brand development; PR and marketing; effective social media; managing workload; identifying new contacts and audiences; marketing; pricing and selling; help with applications (bursaries, competition, residencies etc); curating and exhibiting; styling for photography.

Elaine has been working with me as a mentor and coach for over a year now and I cannot recommend her services and professionalism enough. Before I worked with Elaine I felt alone, unsupported and without direction, but now we work together in a systematic achievable way which encompasses both myself as a working artist and businesswomen. I cannot thank Elaine enough for her positivity, encouragement and support. Sometimes it just takes that extra bit of expert knowledge and experience to make those dreams an achievable reality.

When I first started out as a designer-maker, I worked closely with Elaine to explore the development of the business and identify my next steps. Working with Elaine as a coach gave me the space to talk about my ideas and really helped me to clarify my goals.
